Just ask “why?”
Today, almost everyone I've talked to has told me that this week went by in about an hour. Or at least it's felt like that. Technology has allowed us (forced us?) to do so many things so rapidly, that it can be really easy to get sucked into just "doing." There's nothing wrong with being productive. In fact, we have to be. A lot of people rely on you to accomplish tasks, to keep things moving. But are you really thinking while you're busy doing, or are you actually on auto-pilot?
At MB PIland, we're big fans of productive thinking. Challenge yourself to create a corporate culture that values asking tough questions. The "why?" questions demand attention, and may redefine the status quo. Why am I doing this? Why is my competitor not? Is this essential to our customer experience? Where are we falling short, and why? What other questions should you be asking yourself?
Sometimes you'll open can of worms. You may be (temporarily) sorry because you've just created a big assignment for yourself or your colleagues. But I think in the end, you'll find that what you're doing is better. More strategic, more effective and probably a lot more rewarding. —Martha
